It might sound surprising, but Stevie Nicks once thought about leaving Fleetwood Mac to join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Yep, seriously. This fun bit of music history came up in a recent conversation between Nicks and Mike Campbell on his SiriusXM show, The Breakdown with Mike Campbell.
A Different Kind of Solo Dream
During their chat, Nicks shared how a friend in the music business once asked if sheโd ever go solo. Her answer? She didnโt want to go fully soloโshe wanted to make a โgirl Tom Petty record.โ So naturally, she thought maybe she could just join the Heartbreakers.
โI said, โWell, basically I just wanna make a girl Tom Petty record.โ And I said, โUnless thereโs some way that I could be, maybe I could be a member or maybe I could like talk to them,โโ Nicks recalled. โMaybe they need a girl singer.โ
Campbell’s Reaction Was Classic
Mike Campbell, who co-wrote hits like โRefugeeโ and โRunninโ Down a Dream,โ was understandably stunned. โHe looks at me and he is like, โYouโre joking, right?โโ Nicks continued. โAnd Iโm like, โWell, Iโm kind of joking, but not, not completely.โโ
When Campbell said, โโYouโd leave Fleetwood Mac for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,โโ Nicks laughed and admitted, โI might. I might.โ
The Jimmy Iovine Connection
When she realized joining the Heartbreakers wasnโt happening, Nicks asked Campbell, โWell, who produces Tom Petty?โ He told her, โJimmy Iovine.โ So, Nicks pushed for a meeting. โI said, โCan I like talk to Jimmy Iovine?โ And he goes, โOkay. I can set you up for a dinner with Jimmy.โโ
Nicks remembered telling Iovine:
โWhat I really wanna do is I want to do a, I kind of wanna do a girl version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.โ
Though she never officially joined the band, Nicks and Petty still created some iconic songs together, including โInsiderโ and the hit โStop Dragginโ My Heart Around.โ
