The Story Behind Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty’s Classic Duet
Stevie Nicks entered the early 1980s at a turning point in her career. After the intense and exhausting recording sessions for Tusk with Fleetwood Mac, she found herself drawn toward a different musical energy. Around that time, she had become fascinated with the raw, blues-tinged sound of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, whose straightforward rock approach felt refreshing compared with the complicated dynamics within her own band.
Nicks was open about her admiration. She even joked about leaving Fleetwood Mac to join the Heartbreakers, something Tom Petty quickly dismissed with a laugh. Still, the admiration was genuine. What she really wanted was a chance to capture some of that Heartbreakers spirit on her first solo album, which she was preparing to record in the early 1980s.
Through producer Jimmy Iovine, who was closely connected to both artists, Nicks found her way into Petty’s orbit. What began as a simple request for a song would unexpectedly lead to one of the most memorable rock duets of the era.
The Song Stevie Nicks Wanted, And Didn’t Get
Stevie Nicks initially had a very specific request. She wanted Tom Petty to write a song for her upcoming solo project. Petty was busy recording Hard Promises with the Heartbreakers and repeatedly told her he didn’t have the time. But Nicks kept asking, convinced that a Petty-style song would give her solo record the edge she was looking for.
Eventually, Petty relented and wrote a track called “Insider.” The song carried the bluesy tone Nicks admired in the Heartbreakers’ music. When she came to the studio to hear it, the chemistry between their voices immediately stood out. During the recording session at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, Nicks naturally gravitated toward the harmony part, and Petty loved the way their vocals blended.
But after hearing the final result, Petty made a surprising decision. He told Nicks he didn’t want to give the song away after all. The performance felt too right for the Heartbreakers’ album. Nicks understood, though the moment left both artists searching for another solution.
From Reject Track To Rock Classic
Feeling guilty about keeping “Insider,” Petty offered Nicks another option. He played her a few songs that had been recorded during the Hard Promises sessions but weren’t yet committed elsewhere. One of them immediately caught her attention: “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” co-written by Petty and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell.
Nicks instantly recognized its power. The swampy groove, Campbell’s sharp guitar lines, and Benmont Tench’s organ gave the song a gritty rock energy that perfectly matched her voice. She quickly claimed it for her debut solo album Bella Donna.
Behind the scenes, producer Jimmy Iovine played a key role in shaping the final version. The Heartbreakers had already recorded the track with Petty singing lead, but Iovine had Nicks add her vocals to the existing recording. When Petty first heard the new version, he was not entirely pleased, especially since the single came out around the same time as a Heartbreakers release. Still, the duet worked—and the song quickly became a major hit in 1981.
A Friendship That Outlasted The Hit
“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” became the lead single from Bella Donna, launching Stevie Nicks’ solo career in spectacular fashion. The record stood out on the charts with its classic rock feel at a time when new wave and synthesizer-driven pop were dominating radio. The label even credited the single to “Stevie Nicks (with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers),” reflecting how closely tied the song was to both artists.
The collaboration also cemented a long-lasting friendship between Nicks and Petty. Over the years, Nicks repeatedly credited him for giving her confidence as a solo artist. She often said that Petty’s influence helped shape the direction of her career outside Fleetwood Mac.
Their relationship continued well beyond that early success. Nicks later joined Petty and the Heartbreakers on tour, singing backup and playing tambourine. During one tour, Petty even presented her with a sterling silver sheriff’s badge reading “Honorary Heartbreaker.” For Nicks, the gesture summed up what the partnership had meant. In her own words, she largely credits Tom Petty with helping make her solo career possible.
