Check this vintage video of Deep Purple performing their iconic 1972 song “Highway Star.” And let us tell you, you can’t help but rock on with it!

Released inside the band’s 1972 album Machine Head, “Highway Song” was formed on the way to a gig at Portsmouth Guildhall in the UK, inside the band’s tour bus. A reporter who went along with them to do a feature asked the band how they write their own songs, to which guitarist Ritchie Blackmore did a demonstration by playing the riff G all over, and Ian Gillan improvised lyrics on top of it. Such a basic strategy also went well for the group, who wanted to replace their then-opening number “Speed King,” as they were getting sick of playing it.

The song became the perfect dose of adrenaline for those who need it and was believed to be one of the pioneers of the sub-genre speed-metal, with bands such as Metallica and Motorhead popularizing it. Way before its public release and up until now, Deep Purple still performs the song occasionally at their shows.

Inside the video, two footages were present – one with a touch of psychedelia and another in black-and-white, switching interchangeably. But the same old glory and energy remain.
