In 2014, three of rock’s biggest names—Zac Brown, Gregg Allman, and Vince Gill—got together to perform “Midnight Rider,” a song by southern rock band The Allman Brothers that is widely considered to be among the genre’s most ferocious tracks.

Gregg Allman’s album titled All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman was recorded during a hiatus from the Allman Brothers Band and released just over three months after Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes announced their departure from the band at the end of 2013. With Hayes and Trucks, as well as Trucks’ wife Susan Tedeschi and Gregg’s son Devon Allman, the singer performs both Allman Brothers and his solo work. As hinted, Allman’s special guests including Dr. John, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Robert Randolph, Keb’ Mo, and Jackson Browne are included throughout this collection. The country music genre also is well represented, with performers like Eric Church, and Martina McBride all making appearances.

Gregg is seen below performing the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider” with Vince Gill and Zac Brown. Gill’s voice may get lost in the mix early on, but he makes himself heard later on when he performs a blistering guitar solo that may be the most technically proficient performance any musician ever has given. Check it out here.
