The Mamas & The Papas came a long way before they received the fruits of their hard work. It was in The Ed Sullivan Show, that the world became familiar with their lovely harmonies and compelling songs made to last for a lifetime.

When the swinging quartet was given the opportunity to perform on the prestigious stage hosted by America’s number one host, they knew that their career is about to reach great heights afterward. Michelle Phillips, a member of the group, gave Sullivan so much credit for their success during their heyday. But in all honesty, it was still The Mamas & The Papas’ huge efforts to create such magnificent songs that catapulted them to fame in the first place.

Among these songs in mind was their 1966 single “Monday, Monday,” their first and only no. 1 hit in the US Charts. The song, aside from its signature melody and vocal harmonies created by the members, was the first no. 1 song from a mixed-gendered group, which made it even better.

For their first appearance at The Ed Sullivan Show, the audience greeted them with so much energy, that they couldn’t help but smile at its warm greeting. The music started, and the melodious blending followed, all thanks to their creative voices that knew what pitch to take without overpowering the others. They simply wore clothes that weren’t matching with one another, a move that instantly dubbed them as “the real hippie group,” and that’s the only title they loved to embrace.
