Sting admitted in an interview that he has a voice of a metal singer but “with a little more melody.”

His former band, The Police, had lived a relatively short career toying around both punk and new wave genres. But the musician has always assumed that his group was bigger than that. In an interview with Dominic Miller and Rick Beato, Sting mentioned how he felt lucky to have a band whom he can rely on whenever he wanted to explore all music specters.

“I’m not here to belong to a genre or adapt myself to any kind of rules. I just do what I instinctively feel I want to do,” Sting said. “I’m lucky to have that opportunity and the privilege to do that. I’m also helped by some fantastic musicians who feel the same way,” he added.

In a short span of 5 years, The Police had created hits that were built to last for a lifetime, such as “Roxanne.” With that in mind, the singer, who sang the song in a high register throughout, felt that he had a knack that all the other metal singers have.

“I’m a heavy metal singer, but I have a little more melody. It’s the same way that, to get above the noise of the band, you need that register.”
