Robert Fripp, the mastermind behind King Crimson, has recently announced the formation of a new supergroup named Beat. This exciting collaboration will bring together favorite musicians from the world of progressive rock, including the renowned virtuoso Steve Vai.

Adrian Belew’s Idea and Fripp’s Support

When discussing the origins of the supergroup, Fripp mentioned that the idea was first suggested by former King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew, whom he fully supports and encourages. Fripp even suggested the name of the band himself.

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last Autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently… Even, I suggested the name”.

Although Fripp will not be directly involved in the band’s performances, he has given his blessing for them to play his material. The lineup of Beat includes other esteemed prog rock artists such as Danny Carey of Tool on drums and King Crimson alumnus Tony Levin on bass. Fripp specifically had Steve Vai in mind to fill the lead guitarist role, stating, “Steve Vai is the only guitarist who could play my parts.” This choice is not surprising considering Vai’s impressive background, having previously worked with iconic musicians like Frank Zappa and David Lee Roth.

Beat’s Tour and Fripp’s Openness to Interpretation

It is important to note that the forthcoming tour by Beat will predominantly feature selections from King Crimson’s 1980s studio albums, such as “Three of a Perfect Pair” and “Beat.” This tour is not a comprehensive retrospective of King Crimson’s entire discography, but rather a focus on the band’s output from that specific era. When asked about other artists carrying on the legacy of King Crimson, Fripp expressed no objections, emphasizing that the music was always meant to be shared and reimagined by different performers.

While no official tour dates have been announced, it has been confirmed that Beat will be performing in San Diego on September 17th. This concert will undoubtedly be a highlight for fans of progressive rock.

Robert Fripp’s announcement of the supergroup Beat has generated significant excitement within the music industry. With a lineup of seasoned musicians including Steve Vai, Danny Carey, and Tony Levin, this project promises to deliver a powerful blend of progressive rock and virtuosity. Fripp’s support and endorsement of the band illustrate his openness to new interpretations of King Crimson’s music. Fans can eagerly anticipate Beat’s upcoming tour, which will feature a selection of hits from the 1980s. San Diego residents, in particular, should mark their calendars for the September 17th show.
