Shock-rock king Alice Cooper said that Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister would’ve been part of the Hollywood Vampires had he not died. The band currently has Cooper, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, and actor Johnny Depp in the lineup, who got together to play in honor of friends who succumbed to destructive lifestyle choices.
In an interview with Kerrang!, Cooper said, โThe thing thatโs great about the Vampires is that it started out being a bar band. All we were going to do was go to bars and play songs in tribute to all the guys we used to drink with whoโve died. The very first night we played, it was at the Roxy for about 100 people.ย Geezer Butlerย sat in with us. โฆ Then a week later weโre at Rock In Rio with 200,000 people. All of a sudden, the Hollywood Vampires became an arena band. That happened pretty quick!โ
He also said Kilmister would have played bass for them if he was still around, “All of us knew Lemmy, on different levels, because he played with us so many times โ everyone in the band had done tours with Lemmy. He was sort of a journeyman. I quit drinking 37 years ago, but he came to me once and said, โAlice, I quit drinking.โ And he had a drink in his hand! I was sitting there going, โThatโs great โ and that must be Coca-Cola?โ He said, โNo, thereโs a little whiskey in there.โ His idea of ‘not drinking’ was not drinking a bottle of whiskey each night. Maybe just five or six drinks.โ
He said he chose to stop drinking due to him waking up one morning and started vomiting blood. “I knew that itโs not smart to join theย 27 Club, but my doctor said, โIf you really want to join them, just keep doing what youโre doing.โ I got the point. If you look at guys likeย Steven Tylerย andย Iggy and myself โ all the guys that are still here touring โ itโs all because we got a hold of our addictions and decided weโd rather make 20 more albums than be in a cold grave somewhere,โ Cooper admitted.
Cooper cited that the members had common rock influences, saying that everyone had “the Yardbirdsย and theย Whoย and theย Kinks, and everyone is blues rock. We all come from theย Rolling Stones. When we do our kind of music, it centers on the guitars, bass and drums. Thereโs not a lot of โprettyโ within our music at all. Everything about it is in-your-face rock โnโ roll.โ
