Hands down, Joe Walsh is one of the greatest songwriters that the rock world has ever known. He has created several hits from venturing as a solo artist or becoming a part of a rock group from James Gang to Eagles.

With that thought alone, what might be the greatest song he’s ever written in his entire career?

In an interview with Howard Stern from Sirius XM, Walsh revealed “Rocky Mountain Way” as the greatest song he ever wrote. Like it was only yesterday, Walsh expressed how he created this beautiful masterpiece. Moving to Colorado and leaving his group James Gang while they were at the peak of stardom was nerve-wracking for him, as he thought that maybe he was making a mistake. He, later on, revealed that while mowing the lawn on his house, he was amazed by the beauty of the front range of the snowy Rocky Mountains— therefore sparked him an idea for lyrics, since he didn’t have any yet. His commitment to pursuing his solo act made him do it, instead of feeling sorry for leaving his old band.

As he ran to the house to write all of its lyrics, the lawnmower kept going. He hilariously said, “The lawnmower kept going over into the neighbor’s yard and ate the garden. It was an expensive song to write.”

He also mentioned that Eagles-wise, “Life in the Fast Lane” which he co-wrote with Don Henley and Glenn Frey was the greatest one for him as well.
