Watch Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Iconic 1976 “Travelin’ Man” Peformance

Lynyrd Skynyrd never disappoints their fans when it comes to live performances. In fact, the band’s live albums are often hailed as one of the greats, and in there, we can find several gems worth bringing back for the leisure of viewing.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s live album, One More from the Road has three gigs recorded in July 1976 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia; each gig was a moment to remember. The record is the only live album released by the band between 1970 and 1977—their greatest era—before the deaths of lead vocalist and composer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines in a plane accident. In the album, the band performed “Travelin’ Man” didn’t have a proper recording up until 1997.

Only when Skynyrd guitarist Ricky Medlocke proposed to lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant in 1997 that they record “Travelin’ Man” in the studio with a new spin did the song see the light of day. Ricky was fascinated by the way producers were able to take John Lennon’s voice and piano track from a 1980 demo recording and record around it in 1994 to finish the song “Free As A Bird” after seeing The Beatles Anthology documentary. Because Johnny, Ronnie’s brother and the new lead vocalist for Skynyrd, had always wanted to perform a duet with him, Ricky recommended they use Ronnie’s original voice from the 1976 album One More From The Road, with Johnny singing the first half of the verse and Ronnie singing the second half.
