The Johnny Cash Show | September, 1969

Johnny Cash’s 1969 variety show was nearly 4 months into its two year run when California rockers Creedence Clearwater Revival made their first appearance on The Johnny Cash Show, bringing with them their own special brand of swampy, blues heavy rock and roll music. Led by a then 24-year-old John Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revival had just come off of an historic appearance at Woodstock just weeks earlier and with their third studio album Green River dominating the charts and its lead single “Bad Moon Rising” almost impossible to avoid hearing everywhere you went, their September 27, 1969 appearance on The Johnny Cash Show couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

Fun Fact: Creedence Clearwater Revival’s second gold single, “Bad Moon Rising” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1969.

After an introduction from the man in black himself, Creedence Clearwater Revival kicked off their two song set with “Bad Moon Rising,” a united front led by frontman John Fogerty that delivered a rock solid performance that always makes us a little wistful when we think of the band’s early days – when playing together was a joy instead of a chore and before infighting and irreparable rifts ultimately tore them apart forever. This is one of our favorite CCR performances and after giving it a spin or two, we’ll sure you’ll feel the same way. Happy viewing!
