Soul duo Sam & Dave was a singing act that rose to international fame all thanks to their iconic hit, “Hold On, I’m Comin’.”

The song, issued on the Stax label in 1966, was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, with the title inspired by an experience the two shared. “Porter was going someplace one day with Isaac Hayes and as you came out of Studio A, going out the front of the theater to the right, there was a bathroom,” Al Bell, Stax’s executive told WGBH. “Isaac had come out and was in the bathroom there, taking care of some private matters, and David was in a hurry to get out of the building. He kept hollering to Isaac, ‘Come on, come on, let’s go man, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go,’ and Isaac said, ‘Hold on, I’m coming.’” The line then became the basis for the song, which rose high up to no. 21 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

While the song did well on the charts, it had to be replaced with different titles (“Hold On! I’m Comin’” and “Hold On! I’m a Comin’”) due to its evocative nature. However, that didn’t stop the duo to perform it all over different places once the song was released to the public. In fact, Sam Moore remembered that touring heavily to promote the song since it became highly influential to the rise of this vocal duo in popularity mark. Apart from Sam & Dave’s original, a cover version of Aretha Franklin gained prominence which won her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Talk about legendary!
