Ask any Hall and Oates fan what’s the best-known song of the group and many would point out the H&O’s classic “Sara Smile.” Hall & Oates composed and released the song “Sara Smile,” which was the third to be released as a single from their album Daryl Hall & John Oates. Having peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, it was the duo’s first top 40 and top ten success in the United States.

It was written by Daryl Hall for his then-girlfriend Sara Allen. Daryl and Sara were together for almost 28 years before they split up in 2001; however, they never got married. Hall mentioned this tune as a favorite and gave an explanation for it in an article for Entertainment Weekly published on October 16, 2009: “That was a postcard to Sara Allen, who was my partner for many, many years, a ‘having a great time, wish you were here,’ kind of thing. I cannot tell you how many girls have told me they were named for it!” the singer explained.

The song catapulted Hall & Oates to fame and helped their album rise to the charts, which was declining due to poor performance. The video below shows the duo performing in MusikLaden, a German TV show formerly known as the Beat Club.
