Rising Welsh actor Taron Egerton has been one of the hottest stars ever since starring in the 2014 action-comedy film, Kingsman: The Secret Service. With its success, Egerton was offered a three film contract, and has since done two out of the three with the Kingsman: The Golden Circle sequel.

With the surprising fame and demand of musician biopics today, by way of the box-office celebration of Freddie Mercury’s life, Bohemian Rhapsody, Elton John’s upcoming musical biography in film format will see its release in theaters on the 22nd of May for the UK and the 31st of May for the US. With Taron Egerton filling the shoes for the role of the flamboyant Elton John, there’s been much debate to whether he can or can’t deliver.

But recently, a promotional music video for the film was released. Taron Egerton’s very own rendition of the critically-acclaimed single “Rocket Man” has just been released on the 1st of May, and caught fans and audiences by surprise. While Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek played it safe for the Mercury-Queen biopic with the use of original Queen soundtracks and vocals (and for a good reason), it has been reported that the Elton John biopic will be featuring Taron Egerton’s own rendition of the John’s quintessential hits, with an exception of an “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” duet by both artists.

While Taron Egerton is no Elton John, the actor is a commendable singer, and is able to deliver a decent, if not good cover of “Rocket Man“. The music video features snippets of the film, with Egerton in the shoes of a young Elton John, in his days as a prodigy in the Royal Academy of Music, up to his professional partnership with the talented Bernie Taupin. Check out Taron Egerton’s very own performance of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” in the video below and you be the judge!
