Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of The Beatles, is an iconic figure in the world of rock n’ roll. His journey to becoming one of the most renowned musicians in history is a testament to his resilience and passion for music. Starr’s love for rock n’ roll was ignited during his youth in Liverpool, and one particular movie played a pivotal role in shaping his musical aspirations.

The Movie That Lit the Flame

Growing up in the 1940s and 1950s in Liverpool, Ringo Starr’s exposure to rock n’ roll was limited. However, one movie changed the course of his life forever.

“When I was 15, my grandparents took me to the Isle of Man. They had the Bill Haley movie, ‘Rock Around The Clock,’ and it was just incredible rock ā€˜nā€™ roll,” Starr recalled.

The film featured “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and His Comets, and the music caused a riot in the theater. The electrifying atmosphere and the enthusiastic response of the audience left a profound impact on the young Starr. He was captivated by the energy and allure of rock music and knew that he wanted to pursue a career as a drummer in the world of rock n’ roll.

A Journey of Perseverance and Passion

Ringo Starr’s path to becoming a drummer was not without challenges. He faced multiple illnesses during his childhood, including peritonitis and tuberculosis, which disrupted his education. However, during his two-year stay in a sanatorium, he found solace in playing the drums. Starr’s encounter with percussion instruments in the hospital was a turning point.

“That’s when I fell in love with drums, and I only wanted to be a drummer from then on,” he revealed.

Despite having to work odd jobs, including in factories and on boats, Starr’s determination to pursue his musical dream never wavered.

A Tribute to Inspiration

In 2021, Ringo Starr paid tribute to the movie that ignited his passion for rock n’ roll by recording a cover of “Rock Around the Clock” for his Change the World EP. Starr’s version brought a fresh spin to the iconic song, with a unique solo featuring the guitar talents of his brother-in-law, Joe Walsh. The cover served as a testament to Starr’s unwavering love for rock music and his desire to celebrate the song that set him on a path of musical greatness.

“It’s my EP, and I can do whatever I like,” he expressed.

This tribute exemplifies how the movie that sparked his love for rock n’ roll continues to influence and inspire him to this day.
