The Ed Sullivan Show become the show that launched a thousand careers to rise from the ashes. While it swanked the many names of the once-popular artists, Sullivan’s desire to bring what’s new to the music scene will always be appreciated. One, in particular, The Mamas & The Papas, became known to have reaped the sows of the late-night program’s success.
The swinging quartet became one of the pioneers of counterculture music back in the 60s. More than different than the likes of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc., the group managed to provide their own style by embracing their hippie-ness as a group.
In the Ed Sullivan Show back in September 1967, dressed in their hippy and colorful clothes, they performed their iconic “California Dreamin” single from their album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. A sunshine pop with a bit of a folk-rock technique, they managed to uphold the remarkable harmony and execution of their beloved song. Plus, there’s nothing better than to watch Michelle Phillips eat her banana without minding other’s business. How cool is that?
Furthermore, as stated on the Ed Sullivan Show website page, Michelle also expressed how their performance from the segment boosted their careers, saying: “The minute we started doing Sullivan, people started buying those records. You think of him as being a very conservative guy but look at the people he brought onto his show. He was the one who had control of that – nobody else.”
