Merry Christmas!

It’s December 25th, which can only mean one thing: Christmas is here and with it, Christmas albums! Among those who caught the Christmas bug is rock legend Paul McCartney, who kicked things off with a brand new version of his 1980 holiday jam “Wonderful Christmastime” just in time to appear on the upcoming Holidays Rule, Vol.2 compilation album, but this time it’s got a really fun twist: it’s an a cappella track.

With the help of his old friend Jimmy Fallon and his beloved house band the Roots, McCartney turns “Wonderful Christmastime” into a bouncy, sugary sweet take on the original that debuted nearly 40 years ago, mimicking synth and percussion sounds while Fallon and McCartney share lead vocal duties.

Fun Fact: Including royalties from cover versions, it is estimated that McCartney makes $400,000 a year from this song, which puts its cumulative earnings at near $15 million.

This isn’t the first time the pair have tackled this 1980 classic; last year saw McCartney, Fallon and the Roots premiering their version on The Tonight Show with the help of the entire cast of the animated film Sing! serving up some seriously delicious backing vocals for a performance that made us long to hear it properly recorded in time for the holidays. We got our wish with only a few weeks to spare before the holiday season begins, and their take on “Wonderful Christmastime” is nothing but an absolute joy to listen to. Enjoy!
