Greta Van Fleet have announced the title and release date for their third studio album, Starcatcher, as well as the album’s lead track, “Meeting the Master.” The 10-track album will be released on July 21.

With Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, the band produced the album in Nashville during sessions that guitarist Jake Kiszka called “very instinctual.” Bassist Sam Kiszka asked, “What is this consciousness that we have, and where did it come from?” as the album’s overarching theme, and the Michigan band set out to answer that question with Starcatcher, while also delving further into their mythological lore by reviving ideas from previous works like 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate.

The last album to be followed by Starcatcher was The Battle at Garden’s Gate, which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and at the top of other US rock charts in 2021.

“We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe,” Danny Wagner, GVF’s drummer shared. “We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world.”

“If anything, the record is our perspective and sums up where we are as a group and individually as musicians,” Jake continued.

“‘Meeting The Master’ peers into an esoteric world heeded by the word of a wise teacher,” according to the group. “Sung in the voice of a devout believer, and eventual group exclamation, the song details the love these fervent followers have for their teacher and their firm belief in his vision. It’s an exotic spiritual journey. A dark comedy that inevitably ends in chaos.”
