Frank Zappa for the documentary, Zappa - Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing / Youtube

The release of Alex Winter’s Frank Zappa documentary is also heralded by the availability of the soundtrack on streaming services.

The Zappa soundtrack is comprised of songs that span the entirety of his career, which runs from psychedelia, jazz, rock, and classical, among others – beginning from his 1966 debut with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out, up until his last recording, The Yellow Shark of 1993. It also includes 12 songs that have never been commercially released, which covers three picks from a June 1968 show at Whisky A Go-G0, a 1978 performance of “Dancin’ Fool” on SNL and several interview clips with it, and two songs originally released on Zappa’s labels – Alice Cooper’s “No Longer Umpire” and the GTOs’ “The Captain’s Fat Theresa Shoes”.

Moreover, the soundtrack also contains music from Zappa’s major classical influence, Edgard Varese and Igor Stravinsky – along with 26 selections from John Frizzell’s score.

Winter gained full access to Zappa Trust for the documentary and interviewed musicians who have worked with the late rocker, including Steve Vai, Ian Underwood, and Mike Keneally, along with a conversation with Zappa’s widow, Gail, who passed away in 2015.

Universal is already accepting preorders for the physical set, which will arrive next year as a three-CD or five-LP package in black or smoke vinyl, along with a 21-track compilation that will be available digitally and on clear vinyl.
