Saturday Night Live alum Will Ferrell is making life really, really difficult for Chad Smith these days. The Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer bears an uncanny resemblance to Ferrell, so much that they’re often mistaken for each other and engaged in a drum-off that raised more than $500,000 for their respective charities. Getting mistaken for each other isn’t really a bad deal as they’re both wealthy and successful at what they do, but Smith tricked one fan into thinking the joke had finally gone too far when he screamed at the kid to shut up and angrily stormed offstage after he yelled “Will Ferrell!” at the drummer.

Drum battles, identical outfits – it’s almost impossible to tell who’s who! While Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith may have pretended to be miffed at being mistaken for his pal Will Ferrell, the truth is that they actually really do love it. According to NME, Smith said of his friendship with Ferrell,
“So much goodwill came out of one silly joke. We’ve been trying to find another way to get together and do some more good for our respective causes and I think we have found it.”
Of course, it was all in good fun and a nod to Ferrell’s own famed mock outrage that made movies like “Stepbrothers” and countless Saturday Night Live sketches so hilarious. Smith returned to the stage smiling after a few long moments, confronting his ‘heckler’:
“Listen, are you a musician? You’re a drummer? Why did you say that? Because you love me,” Smith told the fan. “You love me and go ‘oh Will Ferrell!” I’m not Will Ferrell, you idiot!”
Laughing, Chad assures the kid in the crowd that he’s not even remotely serious – in fact, he’s pretty grateful for the Will Ferrell association. “Nah I’m just f—— with you. I don’t give a s—, I think it’s great! I’m f——famous because of Will Ferrell. F— that guy, right!”
