David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust Phase - Mick Rock

A new book from Taschen has been released, which is comprised of compiled photographs from the 1972-1973 Ziggy Stardust world tour which were taken by the late David Bowie’s official photographer, Mick Rock.

Titled The Rise of Bowie, the photobook includes personal snaps, candid backstage and rehearsal shots, and staged portraits that offer an exorbitant amount of detail into Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust career phase. Bowie gave Rock the go signal way back in 2015 to publish the photos, where work in the photobook officially began. In an official release statement, Taschen says that the book paints “the musical, theatrical, and sexual revolution of the groundbreaking record,” and is a “celebration of a fearless, transformative, and eternally inspiring artist.”

The book was edited by Barney Hoskyns and Michael Bracewell and is already out for public consumption. Mick Rock was described by British Vogue to have had a “bore more intimate witness to Bowie the Man than perhaps any other living lensman.”
