Journey’s Steve Perry will always have one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in rock. He can hit the high notes easily and his singing is always so soulful that you can’t help but be emotional. Thus, it’s understandable that when he was burned out and lost his passion for music, Steve called it quits.
He avoided the spotlight and kept a low profile. There were plenty of rumors circulating about how he lost his voice and he cannot sing anymore. But while his voice is noticeably deeper than during his glory days with Journey, he clearly still has it and could definitely hold his own beside any rock ‘n roll vocalist.
It was his late girlfriend Kellie Nash who gave him a nudge back to music.
“She said, ‘If something ever happens to me, I want you to make one promise. Promise me you won’t go back into isolation. If you do, I fear this would all be for naught.’” – Steve Perry
And so after two decades, he is back with a new album “Traces.” Most of the songs are ballads about love and loss. He worked on this for over five years and to him, it’s more than just another record – it’s a fulfillment of his promise to Kellie.
However, just because he’s back in the music scene doesn’t mean fans should look forward to a Journey reunion.
“Please listen to me. I left the band 31 fucking years ago, my friend. You can still love someone, but not want to work with them. And if they only love you because they want to work with you, that doesn’t feel good to me.” – Steve Perry
We understand how he only wants to focus on his new album right now. And we’re hoping to hear more from him because we just can’t get enough of his voice!
