Why Tom Fogerty Shouldn't Be Forgotten

Creedence Clearwater Revival, or CCR, is one of rock’s most iconic bands. Even though they were from sunny California, their music had a gritty Southern swamp-rock vibe that won over fans everywhere. The group was made up of brothers John and Tom Fogerty, along with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. They started playing together back in 1959, but officially took the name Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967.

Their big break came in 1968 with their debut album. By the time they hit the stage at Woodstock in 1969, they were already legends in the making. Albums like Bayou Country and Green River were huge hits, helping cement their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. CCR stood out from the psychedelic San Francisco scene by sticking to a more rootsy, old-school sound — both fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

Cracks in the Foundation

Despite their success, CCR didn’t last. The band broke up in 1972 — just one year after Tom Fogerty left. Tensions had been building for a while, mostly around control of the music and finances. John and Tom, once close, grew distant. Legal battles followed, and the bitterness only deepened, casting a shadow over their musical legacy.

Tom Fogerty’s Tragic Ending

Tom moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in the 1980s to get back surgery, hoping it would help his ongoing health issues. Sadly, a blood transfusion during that time infected him with HIV. Despite his illness, the rift between the Fogerty brothers was never healed.

On September 6, 1990, Tom passed away at just 46 years old. At his funeral, John said:

“We wanted to grow up and be musicians. I guess we achieved half of that – becoming rock ‘n’ roll stars. We didn’t necessarily grow up.”

Regret and Reflection

Years later, in his memoir, John opened up about how he felt:

“I was sad that life had been taken from Tom. That sadness was mixed with other emotions. But I’ve forgiven Tom. I’m not angry anymore. I love my brother. Also, I sure loved the old family days. The way we were as kids. It’s resolved, and somehow Tom knows it’s alright, wherever he is.”

Tom Fogerty may be gone, but his spirit and talent live on in the unforgettable sound of CCR.
