Neil Young has several hits in his career, including “Rockin’ In The Free World.” To make things sweeter, we found footage of Pearl Jam’s 2011 concert with Young as they performed this classic hit in front of thousands of audiences.

Neil Young was one of the few close friends of Pearl Jam who did not attend their Wisconsin festival, but he made up for it last night at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre by performing “Rockin’ In The Free World” with the band. During the Toronto Film Festival, where the new documentary Pearl Jam Twenty also debuted, Young was in town for the premiere of his new concert film Neil Young Journeys, directed by Jonathan Demme.

Neil Young wrote the song in February of 1989, while on tour in the Pacific Northwest. The political climate at the time served as inspiration for this, with the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issuing a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie for his novel The Satanic Verses and the Russian withdrawal of its soldiers from Afghanistan.

In several of their gigs, Pearl Jam has played this song as the last number. Young often invited Pearl Jam to play at his Bridge School performances, and the singer returned the favor by performing at the band’s 2011 Toronto show.
