For Metallica, it was a monumental week leading up to the April 14 release of their tenth studio album, 72 Seasons. The band, who were in a residency on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, played a new song every night in honor of the event. Watch the band play “If Darkness Had A Son” by 72 Seasons in its entirety down below!

The song, which originally ran for seven minutes but was trimmed down to five for the broadcast, features James Hetfield’s wistful proclamation that if the “titular darkness” had a child, then “here I am,” a man afflicted with “temptation,” “yearning,” and “quenchless craving” for an unknown vice.

In addition to performing live versions of “Lux AEterna,” “Holier Than Thou,” and “Master Of Puppets” from their 1986 album of the same name, the band also joined the host for an interview and took part in a puppet skit during the weeklong series on the late-night program to promote their first new studio album in seven years.

72 Seasons was co-produced by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and Greg Fidelman.
