Robert Plant may be known as one of rock’s greatest frontmen, but even legends have their quirks.
While Led Zeppelin’s music is timeless, Plant had his own ways of navigating the demands of being in such an iconic band.
In a recent reflection, he revealed a surprising tactic he used to avoid rehearsals—faking an illness, all to catch a football match.
Plant’s Love for the Wolves
Robert Plant’s love for Wolverhampton Wanderers was famously strong. He fondly recalled the atmosphere at Molineux Stadium, saying, “I was always with it.”
For Plant, football nights were an escape from the pressures of Led Zeppelin. He enjoyed getting lost in the “euphoria, the pain, or the bliss” of the game.
To catch a match, Plant would fake a sore throat during recording sessions. “On a Tuesday afternoon, I would be recording with Led Zeppelin and suddenly get a sore throat,” he revealed.
Plant’s Injury and Recovery with Wolves
What started as a fake illness turned serious when Robert Plant was involved in a car accident in 1975. “I had a really bad car wreck and I was in a wheelchair for several months,” he said. The injury paused Led Zeppelin’s activities, though they managed to record a new album.
To aid his recovery, Plant sought help from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He told the club’s assistant manager, “‘Can you help me to walk?’” He began physiotherapy and worked out with players like Willie Carr and John McAlle.
This time with the club helped Plant regain his strength. He eventually made a full recovery and returned to the stage.
