Songs You Didn’t Know Jimmy Page Wrote For Other Artists

Jimmy Page Radio Interview - Grief Tourist / YouTube

Led Zeppelin is familiar to anyone who knows Jimmy Page. The band was founded by the renowned guitarist and composer, who brought together John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to make rock history.

However, not all of Page’s compositions were covered by Led Zeppelin. Indeed, some of his songs were used by other musicians, sometimes even before Zeppelin was founded. These three timeless rock songs were written by Page but were first performed by others.

โ€œBeckโ€™s Boleroโ€ โ€“ Jeff Beck (1967)

Guitar legend Jeff Beck published this instrumental song as a single, and it has an interesting past. The all-star lineup for the 1967 recording session included Page, Nicky Hopkins on piano, John Paul Jones on bass, and Keith Moon of The Who on drums. In a sense, it was Page’s initial effort to put together the band that would eventually be known as Led Zeppelin.

However, there was some dispute about the song’s composition. Although Beck has stated that he played a significant part in its creation, Page is officially recognized as the author. Several persons have been implicated in making the song, which further muddies the waters. “Beck’s Bolero” is still a potent and significant work of rock history despite the controversy.

โ€œYou Donโ€™t Believe Meโ€ โ€“ Pretty Things (1965)

Page co-wrote “You Don’t Believe Me” for the British band Pretty Things’ 1965 album Get the Picture? before joining Led Zeppelin. The song was the lead single from their sophomore album and had a bright, jangly tone. The story is told lyrically about a man who promises his love loyalty, but she doesn’t believe him. The song serves as an early illustration of Page’s talent for creating catchy tunes.

โ€œThe Last Mileโ€ โ€“ Nico (1965)

German-born singer Nico recorded this folk-influenced tune as the B-side of her 1965 first single. Her first records were recorded by Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, whom she was acquainted with at the time. Her early sound was influenced by Page, who produced “The Last Mile.” Nico’s career in music began with this song, but she would later become well-known both as a solo performer and with The Velvet Underground.
