Paul McCartney Reveals His Picks For His Dream Supergroup

Supergroups in the music industry are formed when musicians from various bands join forces to form a new group. These all-star groups frequently make a lasting impression, whether they are stepping away from solo careers or are simply doing a side project. Some even outshine the musicians’ original bands — just look at Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, who became the main gig for each of its members and helped shape an era.

McCartney’s Dream Team Doesn’t Include The Beatles

So, when Paul McCartney — one of the most iconic musicians ever — was asked about his dream supergroup, you’d expect a few familiar Beatles to make the list, right? Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case. In an interview with Brazilian newspaper Estado, McCartney went in a totally different direction, naming other rock legends instead of his old bandmates.

The Musicians He Picked

For drums, McCartney went with the late Led Zeppelin powerhouse John Bonham, praising his boldness and talent:

“Bonham was always on my top-five drummer list and a great friend and ballsy drummer.”

On keys, he chose longtime friend and Beatles collaborator Billy Preston:

“On keyboards, Billy Preston.”

As a guitarist himself, McCartney made the unexpected move of putting himself out of the band and bringing in The Who’s bassist John Entwistle instead. For vocals, who better than Elvis Presley? And to round things out, guitar genius Jimi Hendrix. Quite the lineup — all legends, all gone too soon.

A Supergroup of Icons

Interestingly, McCartney’s fantasy band is entirely made up of artists who are no longer with us. It’s a subtle way of honoring the giants who shaped music history. And while McCartney left himself out, Alice Cooper once imagined his own fantasy band with Paul on bass and John Lennon on guitar — proving the Beatles still live on in others’ musical dreams.
