The Danish housing market just received a dose of metal. The childhood home of Lars Ulrich, drummer for legendary thrash band Metallica, is up for grabs.

Located in Hellerup, a wealthy suburb of Copenhagen, the property boasts a hefty price tag of $6.85 million USD.

This multi-story brick house, built in 1907 by renowned architect Carl Brummer, isn’t just any residence.

It holds the history of a young Lars Ulrich, where his passion for music might have first ignited. Now, a Metallica devotee with a hefty bank account can own a piece of that history.

A Storied Abode

This impressive residence boasts a rich history. The official listing describes it as a former residence of “Denmark’s elite – including various cultural figures, musicians and sportsmen.”

Oversized windows bathe the interior in natural light, while hardwood floors and a distinctive design add to the property’s charm. Beyond the grand facade lies a spacious backyard, perfect for relaxation or entertaining.

A utility shed provides storage, while a greenhouse adds a touch of greenery. Interestingly, the property’s zoning allows for both residential and business use. Most recently, it served as a fertility clinic, highlighting the home’s adaptability over the years.

Lars Ulrich’s Childhood Memories

Lars spent his formative years in this very house. The Metallica drummer lived there for the first 17 years of his life before moving to Southern California in 1980.

Years later, a sense of nostalgia drew Ulrich back to his childhood home. In the video below, we see him gazing up at the house and reminiscing. He points out his father’s playroom on the balcony, a space filled with the sounds of jazz greats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

Ulrich fondly remembers Copenhagen as a European jazz hub in the 60s, and describes his father’s social circle of musicians and hippies who gathered there. This artistic environment undoubtedly played a role in shaping Ulrich’s own musical path.

Lars Reflects on an Unconventional Upbringing

Lars Ulrich’s childhood was a far cry from the typical upbringing of many rockstars. He himself acknowledged this stark contrast, reflecting on the differences between his experiences and those of his bandmates.

In a candid statement, Ulrich declared, “There wasn’t anything typical about any of this.” He further elaborated,  “That’s why when people like [James] Hetfield, and so on, sit there and talk about their childhoods and all this type of stuff, what went on in here was like a whole different universe.”

These words hint at a unique, and perhaps even privileged, childhood that undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping the man and musician Lars would become. One can’t help but wonder what specific aspects of this “whole different universe” influenced his musical journey and ultimately led him to co-found one of the most iconic heavy metal bands of all time.
