Iconic Sex Pistols frontman, John Lydon, known for his rebellious persona, opens up about the challenging yet rewarding role of being a full-time caregiver for his wife, Nora Forster. The couple shared almost five decades together, with the last two years marked by Nora’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease until her passing at the age of 80 this April.
In a recent interview with AARP, Lydon candidly shared the difficulties he faced during his wife’s final years, especially as she could only communicate in a childlike German and experienced trouble swallowing.
Dismissing conventional advice from experts to keep Nora on a diet of porridge-like substances, Lydon took a more personalized approach, choosing foods that appealed to her taste. He explained,
“The more intriguing and colorful things I put on her plate, the more she loved it. It could get into problems around toilet necessities, when she became incontinent.”
Addressing challenges related to Nora’s incontinence, Lydon drew from his earlier experiences as a caretaker, stating,
“I changed my younger brothers’ nappies when I was young, because my mother was ill a lot. I’ve always been a caretaker — accidentally, I suppose. And I liked doing it a lot.”

Despite the hardships, Lydon embraced the role of caregiver, finding joy in the unique connection it created with his wife.
Reflecting on Nora’s passing during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain in September, he expressed:
“It was almost a relief [when she died] as she was put out of her misery, for five solid years, but I loved every minute of it. I didn’t mind the wheelchairs or the nappies. I just got attached to her in a whole new way and I learnt so many new things about her. Just sharing comedy and humor with her was amazing because that would give her memory of what was going on.”
Lydon highlighted the positive moments, sharing humor and laughter with Nora, creating memories that brought her joy and comfort.
