John Lydon Shares He’s Writing a Book About His Life

John Lydon, famously known as the snarling voice of the Sex Pistols, has revealed that he’s currently penning a new book about his life. At 68, the outspoken punk icon isn’t slowing down. Instead, he’s channeling his energy into a project that promises to blend truth, art, and personality.
In a recent interview with Contact Music, Lydon disclosed, “I am writing a book, of sorts. Of course it’s based on truth, but it’s a juxtaposition of the characters.” This suggests the book won’t follow a conventional memoir format. Rather, it will likely reflect his abstract and often confrontational way of thinking—mixing realism with theatricality.
Despite perceptions that he spends his time in retirement, Lydon clarified that he’s anything but idle. “I can’t just sit down and not do nothing,” he remarked. “Yet I’ve created a wonderful impression that I just sit around watching TV all day.” His creative restlessness appears to be driving the momentum behind the new project.

More Than Just Punk
For decades, John Lydon has been a symbol of rebellion, and his book could serve as both a reflection and redefinition of that persona. Far Out magazine recently emphasized his role not only in igniting the punk movement but in shaping its core philosophies—political, societal, and personal. Lydon’s upcoming work may tap into this same fire, offering commentary as biting as his music once was.
Lydon’s contributions have long extended beyond just music. His intellectual and confrontational approach challenged norms and redefined what it meant to be a frontman. His new book is expected to carry forward this energy, possibly unpacking ideas that go far beyond his days in the Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd.
Though punk laid the foundation for Lydon’s fame, he has always pushed back against being pigeonholed. With this new literary endeavor, he seems intent on showing that his legacy isn’t fixed in time. He remains an evolving force—someone still capable of provoking thought and emotion in unconventional ways.

A Fusion of Expression
Interestingly, Lydon hinted that the book might not be limited to just words. A passionate painter, he’s been integrating visual art into his creative process. “There’s an enticement there that I start collecting my paintings and displaying them,” he said. Some of these works may appear in the book, adding an intimate and visual layer to the storytelling.
He’s no stranger to mixing mediums. In the past, Lydon has published books that featured his artwork, and it’s clear he sees this new project as another opportunity to express himself fully. “There’s a whole bunch of new stuff that is very relevant to me,” he explained, suggesting this may be one of his most personal works yet.
Whether or not the book gains commercial success isn’t a major concern for him. “If there’s an audience for that then that’s well and fine. If there isn’t then I can wait. Even after death,” he stated. That irreverent, defiant tone remains intact—reminding us that John Lydon is still writing his story on his own terms.
