The Everly Brothers released the first version of “Love Hurts” in July 1960. Scottish hard rock band Nazareth’s 1974 rendition of the song became a worldwide hit and is widely recognized as the definitive recording of the song. Fall in love with the group’s performance in the German TV show Musikladen in 1976 with the video presented below.

Nazareth’s power ballad interpretation of “Love Hurts” differed from the original Everly Brothers’ version was full of lovely harmonies, and theirs was the only cover of the song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (peaking at No. 8 in early 1976) in the United States. It ended up being 1976’s No. 23 most popular single according to Billboard. Nazareth gave life to this song three years after the Everly Brothers had split up. The brothers’ 1983 reunion concert at Royal Albert Hall, which was later published as a live record, marked the first time they performed the song.

Nazareth’s rendition clocks in at 3 minutes and three seconds and features lead singer Dan McCafferty’s gritty vocals, sung as if he were plummeting into the depths of despair. Young love is fiery and passionate, yet it may be painful if you’re not careful. It’s clear in the video presented why the world fell to its knees with Nazareth’s pleas about love.
