George Harrison was never the one to air his harsh sentiments on air. He was referred to as “the Quiet Beatle” rather frequently. Yet, Harrison once had a one-on-one chat in which he candidly discussed the reasons why he couldn’t work with singer-songwriter Neil Young; the film of this meeting was subsequently discovered.

Young’s musical development would not have been the same without the influence of The Beatles. In 1975, the Canadian disclosed the following information during an interview with Rolling Stone: “I remember singing Beatles tunes. The first song I ever sang in front of people was ‘It Won’t Be Long’ and then ‘Money (That’s What I Want).’” That alone is proof that Young truly idolized the Fab Four, among many others.

Young even performed alongside Harrison at Bobfest in 1992, which was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 30th anniversary as a recording artist. Harrison was a member of The Beatles. Toward the end of the performance, Young and Harrison paid tribute to Bob Dylan alongside several other artists. Throughout the course of the same year, Harrison made a number of scathing comments about his fellow artist behind closed doors, despite the fact that they had a cordial relationship at Bobfest. During the time when the former Beatle was helping Dave Stewart in the studio with his rendition of George Harrison’s song “This Guitar,” they spoke with Bob Geldof about Young.

After hearing Young’s “Around the World,” Geldof asks Harrison if he enjoyed it, but Harrison quickly shuts off the question. “I’m not a Neil Young fan,” Harrison said. Geldof complimented the tune, but Harrison interrupted him and said “I hate it, yeah I can’t stand it.”

After replicating Young’s guitar approach, Harrison elaborated that it was a perfect moment for a chuckle. “We did this show with him, I saw it from the other side of the stage and looked around, I looked at Eric and said ‘what’s going on?’ He did the solo in the middle then he kind of looked at me like – ‘don’t look at me, it’s not me.’”

Young never commented on the issue, but for someone who adored the Beatles, this hurts as a knife struck his back.
